PART SIX
Quotations
- "Melt it did, though, but somewhere in each of them that snowman was still upright."—Death, Part 6 (313)
The snowman represents the memory and even though it melted the memory of that happy moment stayed with all of them. Liesel and Max are constantly having bonding moments in the story. Liesel makes Max a snowman in an attempt to make him happy but it actually joys her more than him.
- "He [Max] was the second snowman to be melting away before her eyes..."—Death, Part 6 (316)
The first snowman represented the happy memory of the snowball fight and Max is the next happy memory she has to watch slip away. It seems unfair for Liesel to always have the things that make her happy, taken away from her.
- " * * * A SMALL PIECE OF TRUTH * * *
I do not carry a sickle or scythe. I only wear a hooded black robe when it's cold. And I don't have those skull-like facial features you seem to enjoy pinning on me from a distance. You want to know what I truly look like? I'll help you out. Find yourself a mirror while I continue."—Death, Part 6 (307)
Death is saying that death is inside us all. He isn't the walking skeleton in a black robe, but he looks just like everyone else. We are our own deaths. This is one of my favorite quotes because of the truth that lies behind it. We are all our own deaths and people tend to forget that.

My Thoughts and Response
In this part, Zusak really shows us just how much Max means to Liesel. She goes through all of the troubles to bring the weather to him, when he gets sick, she reads to him every night and collects the little things that remind her of him. I was grinning in the part when Mama came to Liesel's school and gave her the code that Max was awake from the coma. I knew that even with as mad as Mama gets she wouldn't have gotten so angry over a hair brush. I felt bad for Liesel because she didn't know what was going on at first.
When the Nazis were checking houses, I thought they were going to find Max. I didn't think that the Hubermanns would be taken away, I just thought that they may have been punished severely. It was brave and intelligent of Liesel to hurt herself to warn her Papa (Hans) of the Nazis. If she hadn't have done that then Max possibly could have been found and her family punished. It made me happy to see how much Rudy wanted to help Liesel when she got hurt. It truly shows his love for her. I felt really bad though when she kept having to turn him down when all he wanted to do was help.
